PAINTCLUB’S 8 STEPS TO CREATING A CIRCLE DISPLAY SHELF

STEP 1: MEASURE

Determine the size of your circle. Use your measuring tape to establish how large you want your circle to be.
Next, find the centre of your circle and hammer in a nail.
Halve the diameter of the circle to get the radius.
Cut a piece of string to that size and attach it to the nail and a pencil at the other end. Holding it taught, carefully draw your circle.
Now tape along your pencil line with masking tape.

Expert Tip: Use small bits of masking tape so that you can follow the curve perfectly.

STEP 2: GET PAINTING

Lay down your Hamilton’s Supa Soaka mat.

Top Tip: Using masking tape, tape the mat to the skirting to ensure no spillage on your floor and skirting boards.

Start by cutting in along the tape line.

Top Tip: To limit bleeding through the masking tape, paint a line of paint in the same colour of the wall along the line of the tape, before applying your topcoat.

Open your paint, give it a good stir and cut in along your tape line using your paintbrush. Once this is done go ahead and use your foam roller to apply paint to the entire circle.

Top Tip: Remember to maintain a wet edge so that the paint blends well and you avoid lap marks. A wet edge is when you ensure that the last roll of paint does not dry before you overlap it with the next.

Apply two to three coats until you achieve a uniform finish. Allow adequate drying time between coats.

PLASCON SUPER ACRYLIC POLVIN

We used Plascon Super Acrylic Polvin to paint our circle. It features:

  • Ceramic technology with enhanced durability
  • Smooth matt finish
  • High whiteness and hiding
  • Very good scrub-ability
  • Excellent spreadability with easy application by brush or roller
  • Low VOC and lead free
  • 7-year quality guarantee

STEP 3: REMOVE THE TAPE

Remove the tape while the paint is still wet.

Top Tip: Be sure to pull the tape back on itself rather than towards you. This will ensure that you don’t get any paint bleed.

STEP 5: PRIME & PAINT THE SHELVES

Wipe the excess dust off your shelves and then prime with Plascon Multi-surface Primer.

PLASCON MULTI-SURFACE PRIMER

We used Plascon Multi-surface Primer to prime our wooden shelves. It features:

  • A water-based primer that provides good adhesion
  • It may be overcoated with a wide range of topcoats such as alkyds, vinyl and water-based types
  • Semi-gloss finish
  • Suitable for interior & exterior use
  • For use on suitably prepared plaster, wood, galvanised iron and PVC.
  • For use over appropriately cleaned specified surfaces to provide good adhesion for paint systems.

Top Tip: A primer prepares the surface and ensures you don’t use as much topcoat and gives you a more uniform and professional finish.

STEP 7: CLEAN UP

Once you’ve finished painting, clean your brushes, roller and tray with water.

Expert Tip: After you’ve cleaned your brushes, wash them with normal dishwashing liquid and then rinse. This will extend the lifetime of your brushes and ensure they are fit for future use.

Ensure the lid is fitted nice and tight on any leftover paint.

Expert Tip: Boost the longevity of your paint by applying plastic wrap around the opened area of the can and then hammer on the lid.

Expert Tip: Wipe away the excess paint from the lip of the tin before replacing the lid – this will ensure the lid does not stick.
