WHAT IS PAINT MUD CRACKING?
Mud cracking refers to when deep, irregular cracks resembling dried mud form in a painted surface.
POSSIBLE CAUSES
- Paint applied too thickly, usually over a porous surface
- Paint applied too thickly, to improve inherent poor hiding (coverage) of a lower quality paint
- Paint is allowed to build up in corners upon application
SOLUTIONS FOR PAINT MUD CRACKING
- Sanding and scraping off the cracked paint will get rid of the damage. Apply a premium water-based paint to the surface, such as Plascon Double Velvet.
Prime the surface, and then paint it again. Make sure to use the appropriate roller sleeve, such as the Hamilton’s Plascon Paint Expert Interior Roller-Tray set. (5mm nap for gloss & semi gloss and 12mm nap for low sheen and flat finish).
Repairing sections that have mud cracks can also be accomplished by sanding the surface smooth before applying a new coat of premium water-based paint. Paints of superior quality contain a higher percentage of solids, which lessens the likelihood that they may mud crack. In addition, they also have very good application and hiding capabilities, which reduce the likelihood that the paint would be applied in a manner that is excessively thick.
