PLASCON’S COLOUR COMBINATION OF THE YEAR 2022
We used Plascon’s Colour Combination of the Year 2022 to bring new life to Elle’s home office.
Soft and soothing, with the lightest touch of natural green, the gentle yellow neutral Pear Fantasy (Y5-B2-1) is our hero colour and will make up 60% of the wall colour. Combine this soft shade with the clear calmness of blue Desert Water (B5-B2-2) at 30%, and to complete the scheme, add a grounding anchor of smoky brown Zanzibar (70) at 10% accent colour and see how your space comes alive.
These colours are in harmony and pay homage to the natural African landscape, bringing the simple pleasures of nature inside.
WHAT IS THE 60-30-10 COLOUR RULE?
The 60-30-10 Rule is a tried-and-true decor rule that aids in creating a colour palette for a room. In a nutshell, you should have three main colours (60% primary, 30% secondary, and 10% accent), and the three colours should be combined to form a palette and a thematic element of the room. Put simply:
- The dominating wall colour accounts for 60% of the total.
- The secondary wall colour accounts for 30% of the total.
- The accent colour accounts for 10% of the total.

DIY HOME OFFICE MAKEOVER IN 3 EASY STEPS:
STEP 1: PREPARATION
Measure out your space and surface area and divide your room into measurements that make up the 60-30-10 ratio.
Using the masking tape, neatly tape off the edges of the skirtings, plugs, edges of the windows, etc. to protect them and ensure you achieve a nice crisp edge.
Using your tape measure and spirit level, draw off the vertical lines, ensuring you keep them nice and straight. Once you’ve drawn the lines, mask them off with your masking tape.
STEP 2: PAINT
Stir your paint and use your 50mm Ensign brush to cut in the area, making sure the corners and edges are painted first. After you’ve cut in, use the Velour roller to roll paint evenly over the rest of the area, starting from the top and working your way down, and remembering to maintain a wet edge.
Work with one colour at a time. Apply your first coat, allow to dry and then apply your second coat in order to achieve a smooth and uniform finish.
Top Tip: Be careful not to go over the edge of the masking tape, as this can affect the crispness of the line.
STEP 3: THE BIG REVEAL
Once you’ve finished painting you can remove the masking tape. It is best to remove the tape when the paint is still a bit wet, as this helps to prevent flaking and damaging the lines.
